The Peak Street overpass bridge construction is complete and the bridge is now open to the public. This bridge was reconstructed as a part of SCDOT’s Midlands Connection project.


SCDOT announces nighttime rolling road closures on I-26 Eastbound and ramp closure at the SC 202 interchange on Monday, October 11, 2021. The rolling road closures will occur between mile marker 80 and 85 and will last up to 20 minutes at a time from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The SC 202 ramp to I-26 Eastbound will also be closed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The SC 202 overpass bridge construction work will be to set girders for the bridge over I-26 EB. SCDOT reminds the public to please use caution while driving through work zones.


The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announces the start of construction on a new bridge to replace the current Columbia Avenue Bridge over Interstate 26 at Exit 91. Work is anticipated to begin in late September or early October, initially with foundation work in the median, ramp work, and clearing and grubbing.

The new bridge will be constructed on a separate alignment from the existing bridge. This will allow the existing bridge to remain operational until the new bridge is completed. Once the new bridge is open, the existing structure will be demolished. The ramps to the Exit 91 interchange will remain open during construction except for some long weekend closures for pavement tie-ins. Exit 91 ramp tie-in weekend closures will begin after Spring of 2022. Advance notice of these weekend closures and related detour routes will be provided to the public and media.

The new bridge is scheduled to be completed in October 2022. Interchange work will continue until Fall 2023. To view preliminary design plans for Exit 91, please visit on our project website on the resources page at https://scdotmidlandsconnection.com/resources/.

SCDOT announces an I-26 Westbound traffic shift starting June 30, 2021, weather permitting. The traffic shift will begin just after the Holy Trinity Church Road overpass bridge and end at Exit 85 (SC-202). This traffic shift will maintain both travel lanes. Both lanes will be shifted to the right onto temporary asphalt pavement to accommodate the construction work on the median. SCDOT reminds the public to use caution when driving through work zones.


SCDOT announces an I-26 Eastbound traffic shift starting November 8, 2020 and an I-26 Westbound traffic shift starting December 9, 2020, weather permitting. The traffic shifts will begin just west of Exit 101 and end just west of Exit 97. This traffic shifts will maintain both travel lanes. Both lanes will be shifted to accommodate the construction work zone. Traffic shifts will occur throughout the project area until major project construction completion in late 2023. SCDOT reminds the public to use caution when driving through work zones.


SCDOT announces night time lane closures on I-26 Eastbound and Westbound from mile marker 85 to mile marker 101. Lane closures will occur between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays and between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. on weekends. The lane closures will last throughout the construction duration for the project. Closures will be dependent on weather. SCDOT reminds the public to please use caution while driving through work zones.


SCDOT announces a 60mph speed limit on I-26 from mile-marker 101 to mile-marker 91. The speed limit will begin on November 4, 2020 and last for the duration of Midlands Connection project construction. Midlands Connection is a part of SCDOT Strategic 10-Year Plan. SCDOT reminds the public to please use caution while driving through work zones.


SCDOT announces an I-26 Westbound traffic shift starting September 10, 2020, weather permitting. The traffic shift will begin just west of Exit 91 and end just west of Exit 85. This traffic shift will maintain both travel lanes. Both lanes will be shifted towards the median to accommodate the construction work zone. Traffic shifts will occur throughout the project area until major project construction completion in late 2023. SCDOT reminds the public to use caution when driving through work zones.


Oversize Vehicle Notice: Due to Midlands Connection project construction, the overall roadway narrows down to 27' in several locations within the project limits between exit 85 and exit 101. The roadway consists of two 11' lanes and two 2’ to 3’ shoulders in these areas. SCDOT reminds drivers to use caution when traveling through work zone.

Detour/Closure Information

Ellett Road between Columbia Avenue and Brentwood Court will be closed from October 18, 2021 to September 2022 for Midlands Connection project construction. SCDOT remind the public to please use caution while driving through work zones.


Oscar Amick Road at Shady Grove Road will be closed from June 7, 2021 to December 2021 for Midlands Connection project construction. The detour route has been identified for the closure and is shown in the map below. Detour routes will be appropriately signed to direct traffic in the area. SCDOT reminds the public to please use caution while driving through work zones.

SCDOT announces an overpass bridge closure at SC 202 for Midlands Connection project construction. Detour routes have been identified for the closure and are shown in the map below. The on- and off- ramps to I-26 will remain open in each direction during construction.

The anticipated detour schedule is as follows: April 26, 2021 – December 27, 2021

Detour routes will be appropriately signed to direct traffic in the area. SCDOT reminds the public to please use caution while driving through work zones.
